Sugar and Spice

If one more person says, "oh, well you can try for a boy after this one" I'm going to punch them.

I am ecstatic about being able to raise two strong independent girls. My mom did. I love the bond that I share with my sister, something that isn't the same with a brother I'm sure. The weight of the world is on my shoulders thinking about the proper way to keep their self esteem up in a world filled with plastic ideals, and let them know that they don't have to have a man to be happy, that they are beautiful and smart and deserve every bit out of life as a man does.
It's when people give me this "so sorry" look about having another girl. It makes me want to scream. One would think in this society, in the middle of one of the most liberal places in the world, people wouldn't still have that idea that your family is not complete without a boy. I guess there's no way around sexism in this world. Thank you for making me even more of a feminist than I already was.

I love my girls. Even when one is rolling her eyes and the other is rolling on top of my bladder. I love them. And wouldn't change a damn thing.

Here's to the first week of my last trimester!

  1. Good for you. I think you'll do great. :) They'll learn best by example, and you're as independent as they come. :)

  2. I totally understand! Truth be told, I was glad when I found out we were having a second girl. And you are right on about teaching them to be strong and independent. I didn't have a whole lot of self confidence growing up, and if there is one thing I want to give my girls more than anything else, it's that. We didn't keep trying until we had a boy. We were done with Aubrie - who was the 4th girl. When we decided to try for a 4th, it was for a 4th CHILD - not a specific gender. Camden was a huge shock. But everyone assumes that we just kept going until we had our boy. And our decision to stop wasn't JUST because we had a boy. Good grief people, like 5 kids isn't enough! My favorite thing now is people insisting he needs a brother. Really, Devin, you just can't win. The stereotypical "American family" is 2 kids - a boy and a girl. If you start off with a boy, then the next one HAS to be a girl. I'm a firm believer that people should just mind their own business. :)

  5. I have the opposite problem - everyone wants to know when we will have a girl (as if I have any control over that). My response (no lie, no exaggeration) - my FIL is one of 14 - ALL BOYS. All of them had ALL BOYS. Brett is one of two boys. We have two boys. You can see where this is going. I seriously do not think there are X chromosomes on his side of the family. (And besides, it took me 5 years to be convinced to have #2, so it's not likely I'm just going to pop out #3 any time soon).

I'm perfectly happy with my boys and can't imagine having a girl. What the heck would I do with it? LOL.

  6. I, too, was glad when we found out we were having a second girl. It actually is easier having two of the same gender. Of course, ours are a lot closer together than yours will be.

I don't think the disappointment is because they think a boy is better than a girl, but because you aren't going to get the "set" of one of each.
